Yevhen SAVCHENKO spoke about his professional path during a meeting with cadets and employees of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, where he currently works as a specialist in the department of social and humanitarian work. Despite his young age, he has a difficult life path and combat experience behind him.

Yevhen is a former military man, sapper, and participant in hostilities. The full-scale Russian invasion found him a cadet of Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy. In the first days of the war, he and his comrades guarded the Lviv airport from a possible enemy landing. After graduating early from the academy, he was appointed a platoon commander in the repair battalion of the 28th separate mechanized brigade.

“Until November 2022, we were in Odesa region, near the border with the so-called “Transnistria”. In the event of an offensive, we were supposed to defend the region,” the veteran recalls. “We repaired and restored damaged equipment. Not exactly what I expected, but this time allowed me to prepare for further participation in hostilities.”

Later, the unit was transferred to another direction, where Yevhen, together with his comrades, evacuated damaged equipment under enemy fire. Later, he was transferred to the 4th Rifle Battalion, where he met the sappers and joined their unit. There he gained his first combat experience, learned to work with explosive devices.

In the summer of 2023, during the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yevhen’s unit demined the liberated villages of Donetsk region. On one of the missions, while rescuing a comrade, he stepped on a mine and lost his foot. This was followed by long-term treatment in several hospitals in the east of the country. Last year, Yevhen was taken by helicopter to Vinnytsia, where he underwent a series of complex operations.

After receiving a prosthetic leg, he returned to an active life: he volunteers and plays sports. “Before the injury, I was fond of martial arts and volleyball. Now, together with my comrades, we have created our own volleyball team, we participate in various competitions, we have awards both in Ukraine and abroad,” the combatant shares.Спочатку були труднощі з пошуком роботи. At first, there were difficulties in finding a job.

Today, Yevhen works at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs and feels the support of the team. “I am grateful that I have the opportunity to work in a structure where all conditions are created for veterans,” he emphasizes.
