VI (XIX) Lviv Forum of Criminal Justice started its work on 17th of September 2020. Event has traditionally brought together Ukrainian scholars, practitioners and international partners who care about criminal law reform.
Event was organized by OSCE Project Coordinator in Ukraine, public organization “Lviv Forum of Criminal Justice”, Security Service of Ukraine and Lviv State University of Internal Affairs.
This year forum became even more open to all who are interested in the problems of criminal justice. Anyone could watch the broadcast on the YouTube channel.
Forum was opened by OSCE Project Coordinator in Ukraine, Ambassador Henrik VILLADSEN. He noted that, given the recent events in the world, forum is gaining new significance and importance. “Over the years, this event has evolved significantly, becoming a platform for exchange of views and cooperation, finding ways to reform criminal justice”, said Henrik VILLADSEN. “We have a long way to go. But Ukraine is not alone on the path to a democratic and corruption-free society. International partners will help ensure that reforms continue and that public confidence in public institutions is restored.”
Head of Lviv Forum of Criminal Justice, Doctor of Law, Professor, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine Viacheslav NAVROTSKYI also greeted all participants. “Topics of our meetings change every time, we focus on a much wider range of issues related to the entire criminal justice system, including procedural, criminal-executive, criminological components”, said Viacheslav NAVROTSKYI.
Event began with presentation of the draft General Part of new Criminal Code of Ukraine. This was followed by a debate on “Procedural component of criminal justice model - procedure as a tool for inevitability of punishment.”
Then participants joined the controversy over digitalization of criminal justice. First day of the forum ended with a discussion of the use of digital evidence in pre-trial investigation.
Event lasted for two days. Debate on “Cooperation and competition between elements of criminal justice” took place on the 18th of September.
Finally, participants of the event got a brainstorm, during which everyone had an opportunity to express their own vision of a safe society and the right to protection.
