Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs hosted an open online lecture dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Chornobyl tragedy. The First Vice-Rector, Viktor Vasylenko, addressed the participants with an introductory speech. In his speech, he emphasized: “Honoring the memory of the heroes of Chornobyl is not only a tribute to the past, but also our duty to the future. We must learn this historical lesson in order to prevent similar disasters and their consequences.”
The speaker of the event was Professor of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law, Borys Holovko. He presented a thorough historical analysis of the events preceding the tragedy of April 26, 1986, and also outlined its consequences for Ukraine and the world. Special attention was paid to modern threats to Chornobyl NPS in the context of military operations, in particular to the events of 2022, when the plant was under Russian occupation for 36 days, which created additional risks for radiation safety.
The event was also attended by Ihor Panov, a participant in the liquidation of the accident at Chornobyl NPS of the 1st category, Associate Professor of the Department of Law Enforcement Activities of the ERI No. 5. He shared his own experience of participating in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident and emphasized that the dedication and responsibility of the liquidators saved hundreds of thousands of lives - and society should always remember this.
