On the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, which is celebrated annually on August 29, servicemen and members of volunteer formations who gave their lives in the fight for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state are honored.
On this day, the State Flag of Ukraine was lowered to half-mast at all locations of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. With a minute of silence, cadets, employees and the university leadership honored those who gave their lives for peace and freedom in their native land. Addressing the university staff, the Rector of KhNUIA, Police General of the third rank Valerii SOKURENKO emphasized that this day became another tragic page in the history of the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian state, when after heavy battles near Ilovaisk, Ukrainian soldiers found themselves surrounded. The humanitarian corridor that the Russian Federation promised for the exit of our defenders was shelled - many were killed, missing, and taken prisoner. The symbol of this day was the sunflower flower - because it was on the sunflower fields that the blood of Ukrainian heroes was shed.
“The courage and heroism of the soldiers will forever remain in our memory. The war continues, our defenders die every day, many are injured. We must realize that memory is not only words, but also concrete actions. Today, lyceums of a security orientation and national-patriotic education have been created in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where the children of the fallen defenders who served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and units of the Security and Defense Forces study. The best conditions have been organized for them, they receive high-quality education and, if they wish, can enter higher education institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the provided privileges. We must not only remember the families of the fallen heroes - we must help and support them. This is our duty,” the rector emphasized.

Addressing the cadets, Valerii SOKURENKO noted: “There is no more important task for you today than to study diligently and conscientiously. Our teachers give you the necessary knowledge that will help you become real law enforcement officers. Serve and study so that people respect you and the Lord God protects you! Glory to Ukraine!”
