KhNUIA: Training on professional safety from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

A training for law enforcement officers was held at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, dedicated to issues of professional safety and the impact on access to HIV-related services for people who use drugs. The event was organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Training sessions for the graduating students of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs were conducted by Serhii RUDYI, National Program Officer of the UNODC Program Office in Ukraine.

The training covered a comprehensive package of measures for the prevention of HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis among people who inject drugs; the role of law enforcement officers in cases of overdose; features of law enforcement and the use of discretionary powers, diversionary and ethical frameworks; the creation of intersectoral partnerships to strengthen the national response to HIV; creating an institutional environment in law enforcement agencies that will help strengthen their role in combating HIV, etc.

The combination of lectures and practical exercises not only contributed to creating a positive atmosphere, but also enabled participants to actively demonstrate knowledge, skills and develop skills in effective communication and interaction with HIV-infected people who use injection drugs, in particular in overdose situations..

After completing the training modules, participants successfully passed post-training testing and received certificates.

At the end of the event, Serhii RUDYI noted the high level of training and interest of the cadets in the training topics. Director of the ERI No. 2 Vasyl KIKINCHUK summed up the event and expressed gratitude to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, represented by the HIV and drug addiction specialist Serhii RUDYI, for the meaningful material and modern interactive training format. Head of the International Cooperation Department, Tetiana MATIUSHKOVA, expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
