The OSUIA hosted a one-day seminar titled “Criminal Law as a Means of Protecting National Security and International Standards in Criminal Proceedings” for the university’s faculty and staff.

During the event, Mari-Anne Roos (Sweden), Senior Advisor on Legal Reform at the EUAM, delivered a presentation remotely. In her remarks, the speaker examined contemporary approaches to the application of criminal law as a tool for safeguarding national security, the specifics of collaboration, the norms of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, as well as the principles of transitional justice and international standards for criminal proceedings.

Samuli Laulumaa (Finland), Senior Advisor on Prosecutorial Affairs at the EUAM, also participated in the seminar. In his remarks, he focused on the practical aspects of applying international standards in the work of Ukraine’s prosecutorial and criminal justice authorities. Dmytro Taushan provided interpretation for the foreign experts’ remarks.

Seminar participants discussed current issues regarding the application of international standards in criminal proceedings and striking a balance between safeguarding national security and respecting human rights, and they also exchanged experiences on the practical application of international humanitarian law in situations of armed aggression.
