On 8 September, as part of the OSUIA Discussion Club “A Book That Comes Alive”, organised by the Department of Language Training, the book “Walls” was presented in an engaging interactive “living book” format.

The publication, presented in the form of a comic book, tells the stories of three unique cultural phenomena of the Kherson region.

Inna Yevshyna, a specialist of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Work, spoke about the history behind the creation of this unique publication.

The book “Walls” consists of three parts, each telling the story of a remarkable woman and a unique aspect of the cultural heritage of the Kherson region. The first story is dedicated to the “Stone Embroidery” phenomenon, a unique cultural heritage that has received UNESCO recognition.

The second story focuses on the Tyahyn Fortress. The Tyahyn settlement has been studied as a historical landmark. During the occupation, Russian forces removed exhibits from all museums in Kherson and the region. The only surviving artefact was a hetman’s mace, which had been evacuated to Kyiv in time.

The third story is connected with the artist Polina Haiko, whose wall paintings in her own home received one of the most prestigious European awards for artistic achievement in Venice. Today, the murals survive only in photographs and video recordings. The house itself, located in the city of Oleshky, was destroyed by Russian forces.

The cadets learned about the contemporary history of a neighbouring city and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving cultural memory.
