А meeting between University Rector Viacheslav Davydenko and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) took place at Odesa State University of Internal Affairs, followed by a one-day seminar on international humanitarian law (IHL).

The seminar brought together police officers from the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Region, university representatives, and ICRC experts, who shared their experiences and practices in the field of protecting civilians during international armed conflicts.

The event program included a series of informative presentations:

international standards for the use of force and firearms, presented by Maksym Hutov and Calum Macdonald (Department of Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation);

Introduction to the fundamentals of international humanitarian law – presentation by Ihor Lymarenko, ICRC advisor on cooperation with armed forces;

the criminalization of collaboration in Ukraine in the context of international humanitarian law, as highlighted by ICRC delegate Sofi Yuve and Mariia Olshanska, legal advisors to the ICRC;

ICRC activities in support of families of missing persons – report by Valentyna Sokolova, Protection Specialist;
Forensic activities of the ICRC, presented by Niamh Smith, forensic specialist of the ICRC in Odesa.

Participants had the opportunity not only to learn about the theoretical foundations of IHL, but also to discuss the practical challenges facing Ukraine in the context of international armed conflict, as well as the importance of compliance with international standards in the activities of law enforcement agencies.
