KhNUIA Researchers Present Findings on Wartime Crime at Europe’s Largest Criminology Conference
НАВС

The annual conference of the European Society of Criminology, EUROCRIM 2026, was held in Warsaw under the theme “Frontiers of Criminology”. The event brought together more than 2,100 researchers and law enforcement representatives from 60 countries worldwide. The programme featured over 450 scientific sessions and 1,800 presentations addressing both traditional and emerging challenges in criminology, ranging from cybercrime and artificial intelligence to war crimes and the consequences of armed conflicts.

Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs (KhNUIA) co-organised several events as part of the conference and presented the findings of its international research projects.

Oleksii Serdiuk, Head of the Research Laboratory for Social and Psychological Support, Assistance and Rehabilitation of Ministry of Internal Affairs Personnel, presented the findings of the international SafeOnline project. His presentation focused on the digital safety of Ukrainian children during wartime. The research examined the evolving nature of cyber threats and the risks of online exploitation of minors in the context of armed conflict.

At the roundtable entitled “Crime and Justice in Wartime Ukraine”, organised by KhNUIA, a forthcoming book edited by Oleksii Serdiuk and his colleagues from the United States and the United Kingdom was presented. The book is scheduled for publication by Routledge in December 2026. The authors examine how contemporary interstate warfare affects crime and the criminal justice system, extending their analysis beyond the traditional study of war crimes.

The panel participants were also introduced to the findings of the RESONANT project, funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme and implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The interdisciplinary research team investigates foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), including disinformation targeting diaspora communities. The project’s primary objective is to analyse and document disinformation tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), with particular emphasis on the Ukrainian context and Russia’s activities.
